Uzumaki Naruto is a fictional character created by the Japanese author Masashi Kishimoto in the Naruto manga and anime series. He is also the main character throughout the series. Naruto Uzumaki belongs to the Leaf Village but is constantly mocked and ostracized by the villagers due to the Nine-Tailed Fox, an evil creature that was sealed within him, which once caused destruction to the village.

Naruto’s dream is to become the Hokage (Village Chief) to gain recognition from the villagers for his talent, strength, and most importantly, his existence. With his carefree, lively, and optimistic personality, Naruto Uzumaki quickly becomes friends with both fellow and rival ninjas from different villages. Nowadays, the character of Naruto appears not only in manga and anime but also in other forms of media such as video games, OVA, and the Boruto series – Naruto’s talented successor.

Naruto is the son of the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, and Uzumaki Kushina, a member of the Uzumaki clan known for their strong life force. Naruto was named after the main character in Jiraiya’s book, which was written by Naruto’s godfather. Prior to Naruto’s birth, his parents and the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, feared that his birth would result in the release of the Nine-Tailed Fox sealed within Kushina. To protect Kushina and the people of the Leaf Village, all information was kept secret, known only by a few individuals, including Biwako Sarutobi, a midwife, a few ANBU guards, and Minato, who maintained the seal.

However, things were not as simple as they seemed. When Kushina was giving birth, a masked ninja attacked, killing the midwife and the ANBU. The ninja then took Naruto as a hostage to force Minato to separate from Kushina and break the seal containing the Nine-Tailed Fox. Minato managed to retrieve Naruto, but in doing so, the seal was broken, and the masked ninja unleashed the rampaging Nine-Tailed Fox, causing devastation in the Leaf Village. Minato quickly returned to the village and severed the control of the masked ninja over the Nine-Tails. However, he realized that the only way to stop the Nine-Tails at that moment was to seal it within his own son’s body. He believed that one day, Naruto would have the strength and willpower to control the Nine-Tails. Sealing the Nine-Tails also meant sacrificing his own life. Minato and Kushina together shielded Naruto from the Nine-Tails’ fatal blow, sacrificing themselves to protect their infant son. As a result, Naruto grew up as an orphan, and Hiruzen decided to use his mother’s surname, Uzumaki, to protect him from the enemies of the Fourth Hokage, Minato. Minato’s final wish to Hiruzen was for the villagers to see Naruto as a hero who helped defeat the Nine-Tails. However, in reality, only the Third Hokage and a few others understood this. Most of the villagers viewed Naruto Uzumaki as nothing more than a monster. Hiruzen issued an order forbidding anyone to mention that Naruto was a Jinchuuriki, hoping that he could integrate with other children. But most children followed their parents’ lead and avoided Naruto. Unyielding, Naruto always resorted to mischievous pranks and disruptions in the hope of gaining attention and recognition.

On a snowy day, Naruto enrolled in the Ninja Academy and witnessed Hyuga Hinata being bullied. He stepped in to defend her but ended up being beaten unconscious and losing his scarf in the process. When Naruto regained consciousness, Hinata was grateful and returned the scarf to him, but he let her keep it. From that moment on, Hinata developed feelings for Naruto.

Characterization of Naruto:

Naruto's Character Development Was Far Better Than Shippuden

Kishimoto created Naruto as a character with many notable traits that make him an ideal hero. For example, he has a straightforward way of thinking, yet he also possesses a mischievous and playful nature, reminiscent of Goku from “Dragon Ball.” Naruto was designed as a “simple and foolish” character, a boy who endured a harsh past but remained optimistic. This unique combination of traits defines Naruto Uzumaki.

Naruto’s attire is inspired by the clothes that Kishimoto himself wore when he was young (according to the author’s words). The orange outfit makes Naruto look more mischievous, and the combination with the blue color creates a certain contrast. Naruto’s image is associated with spirals, so spiral patterns are added to his outfit to make it more prominent. The initial illustration of Naruto depicted him wearing a pair of goggles and sandals. However, Kishimoto changed it to a forehead protector and sandals to save time drawing the goggles and because he enjoyed drawing toes. Naruto’s blond hair and blue eyes were characteristics that made Kishimoto happy and proud. The editors for Weekly Shonen Jump in the United States also mentioned that he hinted that Naruto’s design could appeal to Western readers.

Kishimoto stated that he empathized with Naruto the most out of all the characters in the series. When asked why Naruto loves eating ramen (a Japanese dish originating from China) instead of “sly” udon noodles (a thick noodle made from wheat commonly used in Japanese cuisine), Kishimoto openly affirmed that ramen is his favorite food.

In Part II, Kishimoto drew Naruto’s forehead protector wider to make it easier to draw his eyebrows, which was a source of annoyance in the previous version. Additionally, Kishimoto partially folded Naruto’s pants to make the character look more mature than before.

In the original Japanese version of Naruto, he often ended his sentences with the word “-ttebayo” (which can be understood as “you know?”). Kishimoto wanted Naruto to have a childish catchphrase, so he came up with “dattebayo.” This phrase also adds to Naruto’s character, creating a quirk in his speech that makes him resemble an unruly child.

Naruto’s General Characterization:

Personality:

The sealing of the Nine-Tailed Fox into Naruto’s body took the lives of his parents, Minato and Kushina, leaving him orphaned. Since then, he has faced the villagers’ resentment and hatred for harboring a monster within him. He is also targeted by the Akatsuki, who seek to capture the Nine-Tails for a forbidden and immensely destructive technique. Due to these circumstances, Naruto Uzumaki dreams of becoming the greatest Hokage in history, hoping to earn the love and respect of everyone.

To fulfill his dream, Naruto is wholeheartedly determined and confident in accomplishing the tasks assigned to him. The story progresses, and Naruto continues to prove his abilities. Many characters in the series conclude that Naruto Uzumaki will one day become the next Hokage, following in his father’s footsteps. With his positive energy, ability to bring about change, and the ability to empathize with others, Naruto gradually gains more friends than during his childhood. Among them, his teammates from Team 7, Uchiha Sasuke and Haruno Sakura, stand out.

Naruto sees Sasuke as both a friend and someone he wants to compete with. Despite Sasuke betraying the Leaf Village at the end of Part I, Naruto maintains that relationship, ready to criticize anyone who speaks ill of Sasuke or insults him. Naruto used to have strong feelings for Sakura and would do anything to see her happy. He swears that one day he will bring Sasuke back to the Leaf Village for Sakura’s sake and for Sasuke himself. He doesn’t want to lose the beautiful friendship that took so many years of hardship to build. The bond between Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura is the motivation for him to strive, train, and develop himself even more.

Furthermore, concerning Naruto’s romantic affairs, he has always had a persistent affection for Sakura since Part I, consistently showing special attention to his female companion despite her previous rejections. Even later on, Naruto expresses his feelings for Sakura rather than Hinata. When Pain attacks the Leaf Village, Hinata puts forth great effort to save Naruto, resulting in her being mercilessly stabbed. Naruto feels immense pain and anger, triggering the power of the Nine-Tails within him, transforming into the six-tailed and gradually escalating to an eight-tailed form, the strongest transformation up until that point. Upon returning to his human form, Naruto immediately thinks of Hinata, fearing that his love for the Nine-Tails might negatively affect her and the village. Fortunately, Katsuyu informs him that no one was harmed. Naruto cries tears of joy and relief before officially entering the final battle against Pain.

After a grueling period, he finally defeats Pain and successfully convinces Nagato. Naruto decides to set off on a journey to find Sasuke. He encounters Madara and learns the reasons behind Sasuke’s growing hatred and resentment towards the Leaf Village. In order to protect the Leaf Village, Naruto resolves that both he and Sasuke will die together in their decisive battle. However, Madara appears and takes Sasuke away.

Power and Abilities

Thanks to having the Nine-Tails sealed within him, Naruto can tap into its immense chakra source. By mixing his own chakra with the Nine-Tails’ chakra, a cloak resembling a fox’s appearance forms around Naruto’s body, with the number of tails indicating his current power level. With each tail appearing, Naruto gains increased combat strength, but it also means he risks losing control, as seen when he reaches the fourth tail and is no longer himself. During the confrontation with Nagato, Hinata intervenes to save Naruto, but ends up receiving a fatal blow. The intense emotions and pain for his friend trigger Naruto’s transformation into a six-tailed fox and gradually escalate to an eight-tailed form. Naruto nearly succumbs to the Nine-Tails’ control, but the Fourth Hokage appears in time and seals it once again. He reveals to Naruto that he is his biological father, explaining his actions and the mistreatment he endured from the village, for which they should be grateful. Before vanishing, he encourages Naruto by saying, “You will find the answer.” Throughout the story, Naruto Uzumaki effectively harnesses his vast chakra reserves. One notable example is the Shadow Clone Technique, which creates multiple clones of himself. This technique requires a significant amount of chakra, and most ninjas can only create two to five clones. However, Naruto can create hundreds of clones simultaneously without exhausting his energy. Additionally, his ability to summon giant toads also relies on the chakra from the Nine-Tails. He also learns Sage Jutsu, an ability that enhances his combat strength.

One of Naruto’s favorite offensive techniques is the Rasengan (Spiraling Sphere) – a concentrated spiral-shaped chakra ball created by Minato (his father). When performing the Rasengan, Naruto needs to create shadow clones to help him manipulate chakra due to his low chakra control. He even requires more than two hands to form the sphere, with one hand focusing chakra and the other two shaping and rotating the ball. The Rasengan itself can pulverize and destroy anything it comes into contact with, inflicting significant damage. While Minato intended to merge it with his own elemental chakra, he was unable to do so. However, Naruto succeeds in infusing the Rasengan with his Wind Release chakra through continuous training with his shadow clones, creating the Wind Style: Rasenshuriken. This technique can transform into a barrage of chakra-infused blades that cause extensive damage at the cellular level upon contact, although Naruto also suffers damage to his hand when using the technique. After training with the toads, Naruto gains access to Sage Mode (Sennin Mode). In this state, he can throw Rasenshuriken with great force and precision without experiencing any hand pain. He also effortlessly creates the Rasenrengan (Sage Art: Spiraling Sphere) – two Rasengan simultaneously attacking without needing chakra assistance from shadow clones while in Sage Mode. Naruto also learns Frog Kumite (Kawazu Kumite), which enhances his physical prowess.

With his power and experience, Naruto manages to defeat up to six bodies of Pain, seeking vengeance for the ninjas of the Leaf Village who were killed by him. He alone ventures to Nagato’s hideout, the controller of Pain, with the intention of understanding his thoughts and painful past, aiming to find the answer to the peace that Jiraiya, his mentor, had long pursued. After killing Pain, Naruto gains recognition from everyone and becomes a hero, a legendary ninja of the Leaf Village. This serves as a foundation for him to ascend to the position of the Seventh Hokage in the present. These are the basic details about Naruto Uzumaki, the Seventh Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village, known for his strong willpower and resilience.
