Chainsaw Man Part 2

Chainsaw Man Part 2 returns with a crazy beginning.

Chainsaw Man Part 2 starts with chapter 98: Bird and War, where the public sees Denji as a deity. But let’s start with Mitaka, the War Devil.

Chainsaw Man Manga Part 2 Officially Begins, to Focus On Denji's School Life - Anime Corner

Warning: spoilers ahead, please consider before proceeding!

For two long years, manga readers have been eagerly awaiting the comeback of the most talked-about series of the present time, Chainsaw Man Part 2. Finally, chapter 98 of Chainsaw Man was released on December 12th, and it is truly amazing. Chainsaw Man is a popular fantasy manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto that has gained immense popularity worldwide. The story follows Denji, who lives in poverty and is burdened with debt. He survives by taking odd jobs from the local yakuza to kill demons alongside his cute half-dog, half-chainsaw companion, Pochita. After a near-death incident, Denji is given the power by Pochita to transform into a Chainsaw Devil and begins killing other demons under the mesmerizing control of Makima. While Denji’s initial motivation is simply to “touch a woman’s breasts,” his simple wish gradually evolves as he enters the true Hell as the Chainsaw Man.

I must admit, I was quite worried whether the first chapter of Chainsaw Man Part 2 would live up to the previous manga’s heights. However, after reading the latest chapter 98, I am delighted to say that Chainsaw Man Part 2 not only meets those high standards but also gets me more excited than ever to see the impact Denji has on the world. This is what will happen in the School Arc of Chainsaw Man Part 2.

When Part 2 begins with chapter 98: Bird and War, the public sees Denji as a deity. Of course, it’s not Denji himself but the Chainsaw Man devil within him. Denji immediately feels uncomfortable as the public starts worshiping him from the end of the first part, albeit under the coercion of being the only savior they have while vice runs rampant throughout the city. But let’s continue and see it as a victory in the book of a simp lord who is now “enjoyed” by Makima every day.

I have to admit that I was very worried about whether the first chapter of Chainsaw Man Part 2 would live up to the previous manga’s heights.

Many years seem to have passed since the last chapter of Part 1, and society has changed significantly. Instead of demons appearing equivalent to a terrorist event, there are now demon-centered courses, and Chainsaw Man Chapter 98 showcases it in a concise yet creative way.

In chapter 98: Bird and War, a high school class is introduced with a class pet being a demon, a headless boiled chicken named Bucky. It’s a truly bizarre start to the story, and I don’t think anyone could have predicted this. And then, their teacher explains that they will kill that boiled chicken in three months. However, the focus of the story is not on that boiled chicken demon, even though the first half of chapter 98 is an “unthinkable” twist. Instead, it focuses on a new character, a “sour” girl named Asa Mitaka.

While the classmates shower Bucky with love, Mitaka despises him and other demons, especially Chainsaw Man. While the whole class adores Bucky, Mitaka appears sad and jealous. When Bucky’s final moments arrive, the entire class almost unanimously decides to spare him, which surprises Mitaka. It turns out that the whole class unintentionally passed an extracurricular test on tolerance towards both humans and demons. And a celebration is held afterward. Until Mitaka decides to join in the fun after Bucky encourages her and remembers her name (something only the class president and homeroom teacher remember). Unfortunately, the clumsy girl trips and accidentally crushes him, killing him instantly. Just like how people butcher chickens or ducks, and everything spills out from poor Bucky’s happy belly. This strange death immediately creates a highlight for the new chapter. Naturally, Mitaka is overwhelmed by heavy psychological distress after the incident and locks herself in her room.

One night, Mitaka is invited by the teacher and class president to visit Bucky’s grave. Afterwards, the class president reveals that she made a pact with a devil and was responsible for causing Mitaka to trip over Bucky. It turns out that the class president, despite having an inappropriate relationship with their teacher, is jealous of Mitaka because she is a desire for their teacher’s attention.

After being turned into a devil by the class president and ending up with a literal head-smashing slap, a mysterious bird-like devil offers Mitaka a contract, turning her into the War Devil. Revived with the power of the enigmatic devil, Mitaka decapitates her teacher and turns it into a sword to insult, turns the class president’s severed arm into a grenade, and walks away as they explode.

In the final frames of Chainsaw Man Chapter 98, a new, devil-powered Mitaka swears that Chainsaw Man will suffer the same fate as her teacher and class president. She will make him “vomit out nuclear weapons.”

The first chapter of Chainsaw Man Part 2 not only effectively establishes a shift in the story’s focus to Mitaka but also continues in a more natural progression than its predecessor. In Chainsaw Man Part 1, Denji’s sole purpose shifted from simp-ing for Makima to becoming beloved by the public. Now that he has achieved the level of fame he desired, it is only natural that his newfound popularity will be the central conflict of Part 2. Although the reason behind Mitaka’s drive to eliminate Chainsaw Man is yet to be revealed, every aspect of the War Devil’s connection to Chainsaw Man, as well as her power as the War Devil, makes her a perfect adversary.

If you’re looking for something different to prepare for the next chapter of Chainsaw Man and the upcoming anime, I recommend checking out some of Fujimoto’s manga one-shots. Specifically, “Goodbye, Eri” and “Just Listen to the Song”. These are his latest one-shots, and they are just as exquisite as Chainsaw Man at this point. If you’re looking for something even more desperate, then “Fire Punch,” Fujimoto’s earlier serialized manga, might suit you better.
