How I Met My Soulmate is a manga series that explores the ups and downs of college life and the search for love. In this review, we will delve into the story’s setting, characters, and the author’s ability to create a captivating romance narrative.

The story revolves around Yuuki Honda, a twenty-year-old college student who feels lonely and struggles to fit in after moving from the countryside to Tokyo. She longs to find her soulmate but finds it challenging to meet new people, especially guys. Her friend Sanae suggests they go to a club to improve their chances, leading to a series of events that change Yuuki’s life.
One of the manga’s strengths lies in Yuuki’s relatable awkwardness and social clumsiness. Despite her desire to change and adapt to city life, she lacks self-awareness, which draws the attention of Iori, a dental student three years her senior. Iori, too, appears to have his own emotional barriers and secrets, making their relationship complex and intriguing.
Another character, Seno, enters the story later on, adding further layers of mystery and uncertainty. As Yuuki reconnects with her middle school crush, she questions whether she truly knew him or if he hid his true self from her. This exploration of how well we know others adds depth to the plot and keeps readers engaged.
Anashin, the author of How I Met My Soulmate, demonstrates her skill in crafting romance manga. While the story takes some time to gain momentum, it gradually builds upon internal conflicts and character development. Yuuki’s personality, portrayed as trusting and sometimes oblivious to her own mistakes, adds an interesting dynamic to the romantic situations she finds herself in.
The artwork in the manga is visually appealing, complementing the story’s emotional beats and character interactions. Anashin’s style captures the essence of the genre, ensuring a visually satisfying reading experience.
How I Met My Soulmate may not immediately captivate readers like Anashin’s previous work, Waiting for Spring. However, it still offers an enjoyable and engaging story set in a college backdrop. The relatable characters, their internal struggles, and the unanswered questions surrounding their pasts contribute to the manga’s appeal. With its well-executed romance elements and intriguing plot developments, How I Met My Soulmate holds promise for future volumes.
